Groundhog at Evergreen Road Reviews
Groundhog at Evergreen Road is an informational text full of information about the life of a groundhog. It illustrates how groundhogs are born under the ground and weigh only an ounce. The illustrations in the book do a great job bring the words describing the groundhog to life. The book continues through a typical day for the groundhog including his building a new burrow of his own. The book is full of rich vocabulary and also includes an about the groundhog section, a glossary, and a points of interest section in the back of the book. A great book to use when introducing the groundhog.Possible activities:Have students create a replica of a groundhog’s burrow and label the parts.Create a reader’s theatre about the life of a groundhog and act it out.Take a nature walk to see if you can discover any signs of a groundhog. Record any evidence you may find.
One of the impressive feats an author can pull off is swaying the reader into feeling positively about a villain that seems worthless at first. Whether that emotion evoked is sympathy or admiration, it's usually an impressive literary feat when pulled off. Here we have the tale of a seemingly unredeemable varmint, a blight on the area. But through the telling of its tale, we grow to root for the little pest.
Nicely done non-fiction(ish) in a length that children can manage. Fun for Groundhog Day.
Great story of a baby hedgehot/groundhog as it grows up. Artwork is excellent too.
